Project Title: The Significance of Mangrove Forests on Coastal Communities’ Standard of Living
Project Overview
Mangroves are climate heroes. These unique forests are among the most powerful nature-based solutions to the climate crisis. Their dense root systems protect coastlines from storm surges, cyclones, and sea-level rise, while also serving as natural carbon sinks that help mitigate climate change.
Beyond disaster protection, mangroves support biodiversity, fisheries, and livelihoods for coastal communities. They purify water, clean the air, provide food and medicinal resources, and regulate the climate. Yet, mangrove forests are disappearing at a rate 3–5 times faster than other forests, threatening both nature and people.
Protecting and restoring mangroves is not only an ecological necessity but also a social imperative. This project aims to safeguard these vital ecosystems while improving the quality of life and resilience of communities that depend on them.

The project focuses on coastal areas near the Sundarbans, where local communities depend directly or indirectly on mangrove ecosystems for their livelihoods and food security.
Project Objectives
- Mangrove Conservation and Restoration – Protect and restore degraded mangrove forests to safeguard biodiversity, stabilize coastlines, and enhance ecosystem services.
- Climate Resilience and Disaster Protection – Strengthen the capacity of coastal communities to withstand storms, floods, and sea-level rise through ecosystem-based adaptation measures.
- Community Awareness and Participation – Raise awareness of mangroves’ ecological and socio-economic importance and engage communities in sustainable management and stewardship.
- Sustainable Livelihoods – Support alternative income opportunities for local communities through eco-tourism, fisheries management, and sustainable resource use.
- Biodiversity Protection – Preserve habitats for rare, endangered, and commercially important species, promoting ecological balance and food security.
