Project Title: Protect Mangrove Forest and Wildlife
Project Duration: 2022 – 2024
Project Location:
| Country | District | Upazila | Union |
| Bangladesh | Satkhira | Shyamnagar | Gabura |
Project Overview
Mangrove forests are vital natural ecosystems that sustain biodiversity and provide invaluable resources for coastal communities. The Sundarbans, one of the largest mangrove forests in the world, serves as the “lungs” of Bangladesh and a sanctuary for countless species, including endangered wildlife such as the Bengal tiger, saltwater crocodiles, and migratory birds. Its rich biodiversity and tree cover support the livelihoods of millions of people in southern Bangladesh.
However, the Sundarbans face serious threats due to climate change, deforestation, overharvesting, pollution, and unsustainable land use. Protecting this forest is critical to maintaining ecological balance, preserving wildlife habitats, and safeguarding the communities that depend on it.
Through this project, SESDO works to conserve mangrove forests, protect wildlife, and raise awareness of the Sundarbans’ ecological, economic, and social significance.
Significance of the Project
Mangrove forests provide unique environmental, ecological, and social benefits:
- Serve as a natural coastal defense against storms, floods, and erosion
- Absorb carbon and help mitigate climate change
- Support biodiversity by providing habitats for endangered and threatened species, including tigers, deer, crocodiles, turtles, fish, and migratory birds
- Maintain rich aquatic ecosystems critical for fisheries
- Support local livelihoods through sustainable harvesting and eco-tourism
- Purify water and improve air quality
- Store 3–5 times more carbon per unit soil compared to other forest types
Mangroves are not only vital for climate adaptation but also crucial for sustaining wildlife populations and maintaining ecological balance. Protecting the Sundarbans ensures that both humans and animals can thrive together.
Project Objectives
- Protect the mangrove trees and wildlife of the Sundarbans from natural and human-induced threats
- Conserve biodiversity by safeguarding habitats for endangered species, including tigers, deer, crocodiles, turtles, and migratory birds
- Raise awareness among local communities and stakeholders about the importance of wildlife and ecosystem protection
- Educate the public on the dangers of mangrove deforestation and habitat destruction
- Conduct seminars, field meetings, and awareness campaigns on the ecological, environmental, and social value of mangroves
- Encourage active community participation in forest and wildlife conservation to maintain ecological balance and ensure sustainable resource use
Key Message
The Sundarbans is a treasure trove of biodiversity, wildlife, and natural defenses against climate risks. Protecting mangrove forests and their wildlife is essential for environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and the well-being of coastal communities. Through restoration, conservation, and community engagement, we can safeguard this unique ecosystem for present and future generations.
