No community. No conservation. No future.
In the Sundarbans, coastal life is deeply connected with the mangrove forest. Every river, every tree, and every tide supports people’s daily survival. Mangroves are not just carbon. They are survival. They provide food, income, and protection from climate change.
The Sundarbans shows us why climate justice matters now more than ever. Yet too often, conservation plans are made without the people who depend on the forest. Forests are closed, access is limited, but people still need to eat. Ignoring this reality increases struggle and vulnerability. Climate solutions like blue carbon can help, but only if communities are included. Without local knowledge, rights, and participation, these solutions can create more problems instead of solving them.
As a Green Earth Action Foundation Ambassador, I think the truth is simple. Without community, there is no conservation. Without justice, there is no real climate solution. Mangroves protect coasts. Communities protect mangroves. Real climate solutions must include both. Through SESDO’s Mangroves4Life, we are working differently. We put communities at the center. We protect mangroves while supporting livelihoods.
Because saving mangroves also means saving lives.
