Salt-affected soils are a global issue

“Salt-affected soils are a global issue”
Climate change impacts food security in two ways.
‘Climate shocks’: Which cause widespread losses and damages to food systems.
‘Climate stresses’: Such as rising salinity in soil water, rising incidents of pests & diseases, or growing heat stress.
Bangladesh also needs to focus on the damages being incurred by the frequent and intense events of climate change – floods, cyclones, and salinity intrusion that are affecting the health and livelihoods of millions of people. Encroaching salt water threatens coastal residents with rising sea levels, and frequent storms leading to increasing salinity in many parts of Bangladesh.
1. Drinking salt water may lead to heart disease, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.
2. Salt water encroachment a major factor driving climate migration to city.
3. High salinity makes it near impossible to grow anything in the soil.
4. Bangladesh’s position by the coast, near the sea level increases salt water encroachment risk.
5. Coastal zone makes up 32% of the country, hosts 35 million people.
