4.29 Green Earth Action Day 2026: Youth-Led Climate Action in Coastal Bangladesh

4.29 Green Earth Action Day 2026: Youth-Led Climate Action in Coastal Bangladesh

300 youth. One mission. A greener future.

On 29 April 2026, a youth-driven climate action initiative was successfully implemented in Satkhira, Bangladesh under the GEAF Ambassador Programme of the Green Earth Action Foundation. The initiative was led by GEAF Ambassador Tapas Kumar Mollick, Executive Director of SESDO, with SESDO providing volunteer support and technical assistance.

In one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable coastal regions, nearly 300 students, teachers, and community members gathered at Khalishkhali Saiva Balika Vidyalaya with one shared purpose: to act for the planet, not just talk about it.

Key activities included:
* Climate change education
* Plastic cleanup and waste reduction
* Tree sapling distribution and youth stewardship
* School–community collaboration

A defining feature of the initiative was the Tree Ownership Model, where each participant became a “tree guardian,” taking responsibility to nurture and protect their sapling. This approach promotes long-term environmental responsibility beyond a one-day event.

For many students, this was their first hands-on climate action experience, and the response was highly encouraging. The initiative has already generated strong local interest, with schools expressing willingness to replicate the model.

This reflects the growing movement of youth-led climate action in the Sundarbans region, where climate change is not a future threat, but a daily reality.

We believe:
* Local action creates lasting impact
* Youth leadership drives real change
* Community ownership ensures sustainability

This initiative contributes to:
SDG 13 Climate Action
SDG 15 Life on Land

Looking ahead, the programme aims to scale the Tree Ownership Model, reaching 5,000 students with 5,000 trees by 2030, strengthening community-based climate resilience.

SESDO supported the initiative by providing volunteer support and technical assistance, contributing to youth mobilization, environmental education, and community-based climate action in coastal Bangladesh.

SESDO is proud to contribute to this global youth movement led by the Green Earth Action Foundation.
